1999 ford f-250 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. In fact, the super duty f-series trucks ride on an entirely different platform from the regular f-150 and f-250 models. The new ford super duty f-250, which replaces the previous f-250hd, should not be confused with ford's lighter duty f-250, which shares the f-150's aerodynamic body and chassis. ford's new super duty f-250 boasts significant improvements its predecessor. A roomier, more comfortable interior makes long hauls more bearable. A better suspension, better brakes and a choice of more powerful engines make it a joy to drive. Greater capacities make all of the super duty f-series trucks able to carry heavier loads and pull heavier trailers. until recently, heavy-duty trucks--three-quarter- and one-ton models--were work vehicles. While many still haul hay, pull horse trailers, work construction sites and are modified for all sorts of duties, more and more heavy-duty trucks are used for recreation. Recognizing this, ford has redesigned its super duty trucks with a slew of thoughtful features to make them more enjoyable for ferrying families. But working stiffs haven't been forgotten. more than 44 different configurations are available and we checked out a fair sample of them when the super duty f-series line was launched. But we focused on a $27,045 super duty f-250 4x4 supercab 4-door in lariat trim with the optional $970 automatic transmission for a total of $28,015. the super duty f-250 competes with the other heavyweights from detroit: the dodge ram 2500 and chevrolet/gmc c/k 2500--which will soon be available as the all-new chevrolet silverado and gmc sierra. walkaroundthe most noticeable thing about the 1999 super duty f-250 is the new exterior styling. Some compare it to the big-rig look of the dodge ram. Traditionally, ford's super duty trucks shared a cab with the f-l50 models, but this new line breaks that heritage. While the smaller f-l50s have rounded edges, the super duty pickups look like heavy-duty truck. a dropped beltline gives the new f-250 a sense of openness and accessibility. It also makes it easier to climb in, a welcome feature when juggling tools, briefcases, or even toddlers. A distinctive dip along the front door side glass improves the driver's view of the exterior mirrors, a big help when towing a trailer or for seeing around cargo boxes or dump truck bodies. two new triton overhead-cam engines are available: a 5. 4-liter v8 is rated at 235 horsepower and 335 foot-pounds of torque, while a 6. 8-liter v10 is available rated at 275 horsepower and 410 foot-pounds of torque. Ford expects it to be rated at 275 horsepower and 500 foot-pounds of torque. a five-speed manual transmission comes standard with the gasoline engines, while a new six-speed manual is standard with the powerstroke. The optional 4-speed automatic transmission has been improved. Manual locking hubs are still available for the 4x4s. many trucks these days are used for work and personal duty. Short-bed (6 3/4 feet) and long-bed (8 feet) versions are available. The wheelbase of regular cab trucks has been stretched 4 inches and the truck is 9 inches longer overall. F-250 super duty crew cab 4x4 in lariat trim with 172-inch wheelbase $28,970, with two-wheel drive $25,870. interiorford designers didn't just make this truck bigger and better. They made it smarter. New interior features include a fold-down armrest, a floor console that can accommodate a laptop, and a removable hanging bin for storage that can attach to the dash. Controls are big, easy to reach and manipulate and gauges are easy to read. The only exception is the instrument panel dimmer, which is a bit hard to reach. Two large cupholders are provided. The standard cigar lighter is augmented with a second auxiliary power outlet. passenger-side airbags offer a deactivation switch on regular cab and supercab models. Adjustable seatbelt anchors increase safety and comfort. this truck is much roomier than before. An additional l. 5 inches of seat travel is designed to accommodate a wider range of drivers. It almost felt like a big luxury car. We were impressed with the striking combination of crisp handling and compliant ride quality. The steering was precise. the new chassis is more rigid than the previous platform, which allowed ford engineers to redesign and retune the suspension geometry. Braking performance was impressive with smooth, undramatic stops. Rear abs, which modulates brake pressure when rear-wheel lockup is detected, is standard on xl and xlt. The rear seat cushion folds up and forward and the seatback folds down to create a steel flat loading surface, a perfect place to put tools and other heavy items that need to stay secure and out of the elements. the rear doors are 25 inches wide. They hinge on the rear pillars of the cab and swing out a full 90 degrees from the doorsill. This design eases the loading of gear and passengers and contributes to occupant safety with the combination of vertical beams and a cross brace where the front and rear doors meet. summaryit seems like the timing couldn't be better for a new line of super duty trucks. Nearly half of all vehicles sold last year were trucks and suvs. Ford says the market for trucks heavier than 8,500 pounds gvw has increased by about 80 percent in the past five years. we like the new styling. There are reasons why it's the best-selling vehicle in the world. introductionford motor company has made billions of dollars of profit by providing a pickup truck for every conceivable family, recreational and commercial use, with the broadest possible spectrum of models. Over the years, ford has continued to lead the pack in overall design, with more and more passenger car features folded into the truck mix every year until it's hard to distinguish between the two from the inside. for 2000, ford carries on the tradition. Changes include a more comfortable flip-up 40/60 rear seat and an improved 18-degree rear seating angle in the f-150 supercab. A new overhead console and left- and right-side visor vanity mirrors are standard on xlt and lariat f-150 pickups, optional on xl models. A driver's-side keypad entry system is available on lariat models. Chromed steel wheels and 17-inch tires, previously available on 4x4 models only, are available on 4x2 models as well. New colors are island blue clearcoat metallic and chestnut clearcoat metallic. F-250 models also offer a 6. 8-liter v10 engine and a power stroke diesel v8. It is rounder, friendlier and much more like a car than the competition. That may be part of the reason it outsells all other pickup trucks by a considerable margin. The new chevy and gmc trucks are only a year old, but they already look a bit dated next to the ford, which was mildly restyled last year. The dodge ram has lost its luster, too, compared to the slick f-150. interiorwe find the ford f-150 interior superior in flavor to the gm and dodge competition. The f-150 takes its interior design cues from the company's successful passenger cars, such as the ford taurus and lincoln continental. The designers adapted these cues to the pickup's large cab. The curves, surfaces, textures, instrumentation and graphics inside the ford f-150 are more adventurous, more modern, and better executed than the competition, big and bold but not outsized for a big vehicle. the f-150 xlt has dual air bags with a passenger-side deactivation switch. They offer a lot of interior space for the money. Even in this f-150 xlt standard cab, which comes without the rear seats and without the extra rear doors, there is plenty of room to stretch out. The xlt has new seats this year with cloth covering, a recline feature and a lumbar support on the driver's side for even more driving comfort. obviously, all standard pickups share another trait: a relatively high ride height, even on 2x4 models. But since we do a lot more of the former and very little of the latter, we like the high ride. We especially like the ford f-150 because, unlike the dodge, chevrolet or gmc, the aerodynamic hood falls away very rapidly from the base of the windshield so it's easier to see what's immediately in front of the truck; that's handy for maneuvering and parking as well as dealing with traffic ahead. driving impressiontwo-wheel-drive f-150s use conventional steel leaf springs at the rear and a coil spring independent front suspension. We find the brakes on ford trucks to be average in stopping power and average in fade characteristics. although the optional 4. 6-liter v8 engine is rated at 220 horsepower and 290 foot-pounds of torque, we don't think it's as good a performer in many respects as the small v8 engines from gm and dodge. It's a good, solid engine, with millions of examples on the road, and it sounds good at full throttle, but we find it a little duff for all-around street use, and we would certainly find it wanting if we had to haul anything heavy or tow a trailer up a mountain road. With nearly 900,000 annual sales, the f-150 has been the best-selling vehicle (car or truck) in america for 21 consecutive years. now, they've thrown away the old formula and created a brand new f-150 from the ground up. ford admits the new f-150 is bigger, heavier, and more expensive to build than the wildly successful previous version. It is also the best-handling, quietest, most car-like full-size pickup truck in the history of the world. All of the new f-150 models feature all-new interiors that show attention to detail. The seats vary, but all are comfortable and supportive. Each boasts its own interior style and features engines, suspensions and cab configurations designed to meet specific needs. It features an all-new work-truck interior and comes with all the basics such as 40/20/40 bench seats in vinyl or cloth, an all-plastic dashboard, a black grille and 17-inch steel wheels. Xl is available in regular cab or supercab styles. An f-150 xl regular cab 2wd automatic retails for $21,215, while a long-wheelbase (145-inch) 4x4 is priced at $24,855. stx is sportier than the xl, with a body-colored grille surround for the black bar grille, and 17-inch cast aluminum wheels. Stx comes in styleside (flat) and flareside (fendered) body styles, in regular cab or supercab, with either a 6. 5-foot or a 5. 5-foot cargo box. An audiophile sound system with subwoofer and six-disc cd changer is optional. An stx starts at $22,215. The standard engine is the 300-horsepower 5. 4-liter 3-valve-per-cylinder v8, which ford says has the best fuel consumption of any v8 engine it has ever built. The fx4 has its own instrument package as do the rest of the models, with carbon mesh accents on the metallic dashboard. Captain's chairs in cloth or leather and the audiophile system are optional, and 18-inch cast aluminum wheels are optional. An f-150 fx4 supercab 4x4 5. 4-liter v8 automatic retails for $32,185. lariat is the luxury model and, for the time being, sits at the top of the line. Lariat has its own grille design and comes standard with 18-inch wheels. It amplifies the all-new interior with black-on-cream instrumentation, lots of wood trim and brushed metal, a multi-function steering wheel, and a shiny floor shifter mounted in a floor console. A power 40/20/40 split bench seat with seat memory is standard, along with power adjustable floor pedals, an in-dash message center, and climate control. Heated power leather captain's chairs are optional. Lariat 2wd models are available in all three body styles, but 4x4 versions are only available with styleside fenders. The nearest competitor has only 12 variations, a fact that ford hopes will bring more people into its dealerships. In addition to the 26 variants of the f-150 within the five model ranges, there are dozens of options,. walkaroundall ford f-150s now have the front window style popularized on the f-250 and f-350 super duty pickups: a sharp cut in the forward part of the door sheet metal that drops away to allow much clearer viewing of the large rearview mirrors on both sides. the whole nose is shaped more squarely, the grilles are larger and bolder, the bodyside and cargo box sheet metal is more sculpted, and every bed, no matter which length or style, is two inches taller than previous beds to give more margin when hauling larger cargoes. It's the seven-crossmember skeleton onto which everything else bolts, and accounts for quite a bit of the nearly 675 pounds more weight of the new f-150 compared to the old truck. The frame is nine times more resistant to twisting and 50 percent more resistant to bending than the old c-shaped frame. the front suspension is a completely new double-wishbone style for both 2wd and 4wd versions. The rear suspension now has outboard, rather than inboard, shock absorbers to control the rear end of the truck better in quick maneuvers, along with wider, heavier three-inch leaf springs. the steering has been changed to a heavy-duty power-assisted rack-and-pinion system. The ford truck folks committed only one unpardonable by us: the clear plastic over the instrument pod is way, way too reflective and makes most of the instruments difficult to see in bright sunlight. Ford says that, between these two things, the 5. 4-liter engine, which makes a nice, round 300 horsepower and 335 foot-pounds of torque, is also the fuel-stingiest engine the company has ever tested. The f-150 was completely redesigned for 2009. So for 2010, changes are limited to packaging. smooth and quiet, the f-150 is comfortable on bumpy streets around town, over rugged terrain such as that found at construction sites, and on the open road. Its steering is nicely waited and requires little correction on the highway making it nice for long cross-country tows. Yet even the least-expensive f-150 isn't boring; it leaves room for customization, does the work required and keeps overhead down. with one of the deepest beds in the segment, the f-150 has generous cargo volume out back and a maximum payload rating of 3,030 pounds. A properly equipped regular cab f-150 is rated to tow up to 11,300 pounds; other models max out in the 9,000-pound range. (the ford super duty range of heavy-duty pickups is covered in a separate new car test drive review.) three v8 engines are offered. It is rated at 310 horsepower and 365 pound-feet on gasoline (epa 14/20 mpg) and 320 horsepower and 390 pound-feet on e85 with mileage dropped to 10/14 mpg. The mykey programmable vehicle key is standard on all models except the base xl trim level. Supercab trucks add higher fx4 and lariat trim levels, and a short-bed option (about 5. 5 feet) on all but xl models. The flareside bed can not be combined with xl or lariat supercabs. A long-bed supercab is available only with the heavy-duty 5. 4-liter package. The supercrew f-150, available with either the short or standard bed, drops the stx grade and adds king ranch and platinum derivatives. the f-150 xl 21,380) is a standard bed, regular cab two-wheel drive. It comes with 17-inch steel wheels, black bumper/grille/mirrors, and vinyl upholstery and floor covering. More equipment is available, including 18-inch wheels, sirius radio, sync, cruise control, fog lamps and power mirrors. xlt (from $25,575) adds chrome for bumpers and trim, power mirrors, remote keyless entry, automatic headlamps, carpeting, cruise control, power windows and locks, better cloth upholstery and, on longer cabs, the three-valve 4. 6-liter v8 and six-speed automatic transmission. Chrome trim and bumpers highlight monotone paint, and the lariat adds heated mirrors with signal repeaters and auto-dimming on the driver's and inside, dual-zone climate control, heated power leather seats with driver memory, leather wheel with redundant audio controls, tow package, sync, trip computer, and power adjustable pedals. Options include 20-inch wheels, heated/cooled front seats, sony sound and navigation, trailer brake controller, rear camera and park sensors, and moonroof. king ranch (from $40,200) is like a lariat with a different attitude.
