Roomy, comfortable, competent and well-equipped. introductionthe ford taurus was all-new for 2010 and continues into 2011 with no substantive changes. 2011 is the year of the taurus for those who believe the best time to buy a car is in its second year of production, the theory being all the bugs have been worked out. the taurus is impressive, well-equipped and extremely competent, a charismatic full-size sedan that could establish ford as america's premier auto manufacturer. It is powered with a duratec v6, delivering a generous 263 horsepower and 249 pound-feet of torque. at the top of the 2011 taurus line is the high-performance taurus sho, with a twin-turbocharged ecoboost v6 rated at 365 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque. The taurus and taurus sho are the flagships of ford's entire line. And since, at long last, sedans are once again outselling trucks nationally, ford has every reason to be optimistic about the taurus's role in ford's future. we found the taurus to be a responsive, comfortable, and protective family sedan, whether in se, sel or limited trim. But this car is far more than a dull, utilitarian appliance. ford refers to taurus's world-car styling as emotive and bold. Its looks have magnetism and a sleekly contemporary appearance designed to win owners who take seriously how they appear to the outside world. Judged on price alone, this is no luxury car. Yet its visual impact will go a long way toward making its occupants feel very good about themselves. This is a car to be seen in. the taurus is packed with innovative technology and electronics, beneficial driver-assistance provisions, and safety packages that outstrip import sedans costing half again more. Among these packages are comprehensive warning systems programmed to alert the driver to obstacles front, side and rear, a boon in crowded parking lots. A brilliant adaptive cruise control system lets the driver relax on the highway, while it automatically controls the gap to the car ahead. Beyond the new technology, impressive as it is, it will still be the car's over-the-road driving character that determines its ultimate appeal. we drove taurus and taurus sho models on freeways and backroads in the twisty hill country of tennessee and checked them over further in southern california. The sho performance package 995) includes performance brake pads, epas-calibrated steering, ecs track mode/true off, 3. 16:1 final drive ratio, and 20-inch painted wheels with 245/45yr20 performance summer tires. safety features include dual front airbags, front-seat side-impact airbags, canopy airbags, collision warning with brake support, blind spot information system with cross-traffic alert, tire-pressure monitoring system, electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes, sos post-crash alert, traction control, reverse sensing system, and anchors for child seats. Optional all-wheel drive enhances safety in slippery conditions. walkaroundthe taurus is a thoroughly american design, yet it owes almost nothing to the long, ponderous line of over-styled american sedans of the past. Its styling is exciting and chic, more than a match for any foreign competitors in its price class or even for competitors that cost a good deal more. Even in its most mundane models, it has an aggressive, ready-to-go demeanor. the signature three-bar grille on the taurus wraps around to sleek, swept-back headlamp complexes. The expression on this car's face is a wry glint that says this car knows what it's doing. the side panels are muscular and handsomely sculpted, while the side profile shows a distant similarity to the currently fashionable audi family. The only peculiarity is the odd bullet-head of chrome on the front fender sides just ahead of the front-door cut. Isolated where it is, it's a tic that ford styling could do without. at the rear, the car's lines feature another pair of sleek lamp complexes, tied together with a gleaming horizontal chrome strip. On the taurus sho, the upper lip of the trunk is adorned with a spoiler; with the speed the sho can generate, the added downforce is appropriate. particularly in the upper reaches of the model line, handsome wheels bring the taurus's profile brightly to life. In the limited and sho versions, big 19-inch wheels and tires give the taurus a resolutely competitive look. a key element of the sho formula is the subtlety of its unique exterior design cues. The sho is distinguished from other taurus models by special wheels, the decklid spoiler, twin exhaust tips, unique grille work and unique parking lamp bezels. interiorinside, the ford taurus is roomy, comfortable, and quiet. The dashboard takes an unusual form. Its upper surface is a broad, downward-curving shape that behaves almost like a sunshade over the dash's cascade of equipment and gauges. The gauges have a fresh, modern look, and all instrument lights are fully lit at all times. This is important, because so many cars dim their instruments in daylight, enough so that in high sun, the gauges and readouts are unreadable. For this bright decision, give ford an a-plus. the taurus paddle shifters are based on the bmw paradigm, with shifters on both sides of the wheel, a pull granting an upshift and a push yielding a downshift. The six-speed transmission, present in all models, works remarkably well, especially in the sho, where it is programmed to provide still-faster gear changes than with the normal taurus. However, this writer prefers the ferrari paradigm, where the paddle on one side of the wheel summons an upshift, and downshifts are summoned at the opposite side of the wheel. This is simpler and more intuitive. This full range of technologies is offered in no other family sedan within th. In fact, the super duty f-series trucks ride on an entirely different platform from the regular f-150 and f-250 models. The new ford super duty f-250, which replaces the previous f-250hd, should not be confused with ford's lighter duty f-250, which shares the f-150's aerodynamic body and chassis. ford's new super duty f-250 boasts significant improvements its predecessor. A roomier, more comfortable interior makes long hauls more bearable. A better suspension, better brakes and a choice of more powerful engines make it a joy to drive. Greater capacities make all of the super duty f-series trucks able to carry heavier loads and pull heavier trailers. until recently, heavy-duty trucks--three-quarter- and one-ton models--were work vehicles. While many still haul hay, pull horse trailers, work construction sites and are modified for all sorts of duties, more and more heavy-duty trucks are used for recreation. Recognizing this, ford has redesigned its super duty trucks with a slew of thoughtful features to make them more enjoyable for ferrying families. But working stiffs haven't been forgotten. more than 44 different configurations are available and we checked out a fair sample of them when the super duty f-series line was launched. But we focused on a $27,045 super duty f-250 4x4 supercab 4-door in lariat trim with the optional $970 automatic transmission for a total of $28,015. the super duty f-250 competes with the other heavyweights from detroit: the dodge ram 2500 and chevrolet/gmc c/k 2500--which will soon be available as the all-new chevrolet silverado and gmc sierra. walkaroundthe most noticeable thing about the 1999 super duty f-250 is the new exterior styling. Some compare it to the big-rig look of the dodge ram. Traditionally, ford's super duty trucks shared a cab with the f-l50 models, but this new line breaks that heritage. While the smaller f-l50s have rounded edges, the super duty pickups look like heavy-duty truck. a dropped beltline gives the new f-250 a sense of openness and accessibility. It also makes it easier to climb in, a welcome feature when juggling tools, briefcases, or even toddlers. A distinctive dip along the front door side glass improves the driver's view of the exterior mirrors, a big help when towing a trailer or for seeing around cargo boxes or dump truck bodies. two new triton overhead-cam engines are available: a 5. 4-liter v8 is rated at 235 horsepower and 335 foot-pounds of torque, while a 6. 8-liter v10 is available rated at 275 horsepower and 410 foot-pounds of torque. Ford expects it to be rated at 275 horsepower and 500 foot-pounds of torque. a five-speed manual transmission comes standard with the gasoline engines, while a new six-speed manual is standard with the powerstroke. The optional 4-speed automatic transmission has been improved. Manual locking hubs are still available for the 4x4s. many trucks these days are used for work and personal duty. Short-bed (6 3/4 feet) and long-bed (8 feet) versions are available. The wheelbase of regular cab trucks has been stretched 4 inches and the truck is 9 inches longer overall. F-250 super duty crew cab 4x4 in lariat trim with 172-inch wheelbase $28,970, with two-wheel drive $25,870. interiorford designers didn't just make this truck bigger and better. They made it smarter. New interior features include a fold-down armrest, a floor console that can accommodate a laptop, and a removable hanging bin for storage that can attach to the dash. Controls are big, easy to reach and manipulate and gauges are easy to read. The only exception is the instrument panel dimmer, which is a bit hard to reach. Two large cupholders are provided. The standard cigar lighter is augmented with a second auxiliary power outlet. passenger-side airbags offer a deactivation switch on regular cab and supercab models. Adjustable seatbelt anchors increase safety and comfort. this truck is much roomier than before. An additional l. 5 inches of seat travel is designed to accommodate a wider range of drivers. It almost felt like a big luxury car. We were impressed with the striking combination of crisp handling and compliant ride quality. The steering was precise. the new chassis is more rigid than the previous platform, which allowed ford engineers to redesign and retune the suspension geometry. Braking performance was impressive with smooth, undramatic stops. Rear abs, which modulates brake pressure when rear-wheel lockup is detected, is standard on xl and xlt. The rear seat cushion folds up and forward and the seatback folds down to create a steel flat loading surface, a perfect place to put tools and other heavy items that need to stay secure and out of the elements. the rear doors are 25 inches wide. They hinge on the rear pillars of the cab and swing out a full 90 degrees from the doorsill. This design eases the loading of gear and passengers and contributes to occupant safety with the combination of vertical beams and a cross brace where the front and rear doors meet. summaryit seems like the timing couldn't be better for a new line of super duty trucks. Nearly half of all vehicles sold last year were trucks and suvs. Ford says the market for trucks heavier than 8,500 pounds gvw has increased by about 80 percent in the past five years. we like the new styling.
