The quintessential off-road vehicle. introductionfew vehicles are better off-road than a jeep wrangler. This is the one that started it all. Traceable to the original jeep, the wrangler is the very symbol of off-road capability. the wrangler was redesigned for the 2007 model year. It's much more comfortable and convenient, offering more cargo and rear-seat passenger space. still, the traditional two-door wrangler has its charms. We enjoy all of them, including the entry models with skinny tires. the 2009 wrangler has only minor changes over the previous year, including a couple of new colors and some minor interior storage features. Hill start assist, which makes it easier to get moving from rest while heading uphill, is standard equipment, and the optional trailer tow group includes trailer sway control, which monitors vehicle movement relative to the driver's intended path and initiates the activation of the electronic stability control if the trailer begins to sway to an excessive degree. the wrangler is available in a very wide range of models and trim levels and with an extensive array of optional equipment and features. This makes the possible number of combinations much more than we can cover here. In all versions, the 3. 8-liter v6 engine develops 202 horsepower and 237 pound-feet of torque. The latest generation looks quite similar to the previous version, which ended production with the 2006 model year. The upright fold-down windshield is slightly curved for better aerodynamics and reduced wind noise. along the sides, all wranglers have assist steps under the doors to make climbing in easier, and fender flares that are bolted on, so they can be easily taken off for repair or replacement. the standard soft top is relatively easy to remove and install. The sunrider soft top slides back half way, like a huge sunroof over the front seats. The optional three-piece modular hardtop (freedom top) has two front panels that easily pop on and off like a t-top, and can be stored behind the rear seat. The third panel over the rear seat can be removed separately and stored in the garage. The freedom top yields a total of six open-air possibilities. under the body, there's a boxed frame with seven crossmembers. Wide-spaced frame rails cradle the fuel tank between the wheels. Three skid plates protect the fuel tank, transfer case and automatic transmission oil pan. interiorwranglers have traditionally been known as cramped inside. The current jeep wrangler two-door is a lot roomier inside than pre-2007 models, thanks to its increased width. The comfortable high-back front seats offer more shoulder and hip room than previous-generation models, and the removable rear seat provides more shoulder, hip and leg room for each of the two passengers. The headrests flip back, so they don't need to be removed, making it easy to switch between cargo and rear-seat-passenger modes. That huge difference is because, in the two-door model, the rear passengers sit directly over the axle and between the wheel wells; in the unlimited, the axle is located behind the passengers. The instruments, including the optional compass and temperature gauges, are easy to read, and the controls are simple. The solid square buttons look good and are easy to understand and operate. The materials are made of sturdy plastic that works well in the utilitarian wrangler. the optional 368-watt infinity sound system comes with seven speakers, including a subwoofer. That's a lot of speakers for a jeep, but we think this is a good thing. It comes with sirius satellite radio, good for keeping up with the news when out in the boonies. The locking glove box is pretty big and there's a convenient grab handle above it. This is a jeep, after all, so the grab handle will be used on bouncy roads – or where there are no roads at all. the modular freedom top for the unlimited features sections that easily lift off and can be stored behind the rear seat. We found storing the two roof panels eliminates most of the cargo space. Cargo space is not unlimited in the unlimited. But it's a relative thing. Compared to earlier versions, the current model feels like a luxury liner. compared to the last-generation wrangler, the wheelbase is longer and the front and rear. The wrangler is the icon of the jeep brand, and there are no direct competitors for it. As jeep says, there's only one. headlining the 2003 jeep wrangler lineup is the rubicon, which boasts a serious off-road suspension, a powerful 4. 0-liter six-cylinder engine, a dana rear end, and other changes, all designed to improve 4x4 capabilities. Redesigned front and rear seats offer more room and are easier to work with. Redesigned exterior mirrors help reduce noise, vibration and harshness and are wider, offering a better view rearward. built along jeep's 'go anywhere, do anything' design philosophy, the new rubicon is a 4x4 gem. After driving through hell's revenge, cliff hanger, and other challenging trails around moab, i am happy to report that the rubicon passes the off-road test with flying colors. The new engine delivers 25 percent more horsepower and 18 percent more torque than the previous engine (150 hp @ 5200 rpm and 165 pounds-feet @ 4000 rpm). It works well with the standard five-speed gearbox, which is a new heavy-duty transmission with synchronized reverse gearing and improved shift quality in cold weather. Still, the se does not offer thrilling acceleration performance. At first glance, the se looks attractive, but its low price quickly rises when upgraded upholstery, a rear seat, rear carpeting, a stereo and other options are added. A variety of options is available, including the hard top. wrangler x, sport, sahara, and rubicon models come with a much more powerful 4. 0-liter six-cylinder engine rated at 190 horsepower and 235 pounds-feet of torque. The inline-6 gives up some fuel economy to the inline-4 around town, but the six-cylinder gets 19 mpg on the highway. wrangler x comes with cloth upholstery, upgraded front seats, a fold-down rear seat. The rubicon is designed to reflect the original vision realized in 1940, when jeep invented the sport-utility and dominated off-road travel. Jeep even recreated sections of the famed rubicon trail at its proving grounds in michigan to test the durability and capabilities of its newest offering. Rubicon comes equipped with diamond plate sill guards, front and rear dana axles and driver-actuated locking differentials. Standard are 31-inch tall tires and 16-inch five-spoke wheels. It's available in all of the wrangler exterior colors. all models in the lineup include a fold-down windshield, removable doors and top, and a weatherproof interior. Drivers may choose between hard- and soft-top models. That hasn't changed. All boast distinctive round headlamps. Uplevel models come with front fog lamps and bumpers and wheel wells in a contrasting color. a few additions to the exterior distinguish the rubicon from others in the lineup. A 22-inch long nameplate is prominently emblazoned on either side of the hood. Heavy-gauge diamond plate sill guards are bolted to the body sides to protect rocker panels from the damage and dings of rocks and stumps in the backcountry. Goodyear wrangler 31-inch tires are mounted on new 16-inch, five-spoke aluminum wheels with a dished face to protect them from debris and obstacles. Ten inches of ground clearance helps the rubicon traverse the trail. one of the biggest decisions when buying a wrangler is selecting the top. Purists prefer the soft top, a high-quality piece of equipment that can be configured according to the weather. Folding the top down takes only a third of the time it took before a redesigned top was introduced for 2001. It comes with full-height doors and roll-up windows. Rearward visibility is aided by the rear-window defroster, wiper and washer. Wind noise is greatly reduced. Either top is far easier to remove or install than those of pre-2001 models and provides much better sealing from the elements. the new exterior mirrors are made of plastic, which jeep engineers say holds up better than metal when going off road. . interiorinside, the jeep wrangler's space is spartan but highly functional. New seat designs and fabrics make it more comfortable. All models come with a weatherproofed interior that features removable drain plugs for hosing out the interior. the wrangler remains miles away from luxurious, but improvements for 2003 make the interior more comfortable. Softer trim pieces inside offer improved head protection. New corner pods located just behind the b-pillar on both sides of the wrangler house interior lamps, providing theater lighting. Optional roof speakers are available. a new center stack with new radios improve functionality. A new, more easily removable fold-and-tumble rear seat is equipped with the latch (lower anchors and upper tethers for children) system for mounting child safety seats directly to the structure of the seat. All 2014 grand cherokee models come with a new 8-speed automatic transmission, replacing the previous 5-speed. And a new ecodiesel v6 engine is available that provides good performance and fuel economy. Inside, the 2014 grand cherokee gets updated electronics. The rear-drives account for a small fraction of sales, but they get better fuel economy and claims of 30 mpg highway is worth a small fortune to jeep. this is a sport-utility for a family of five. Trim varies from cloth upholstery and faux wood to piped, perforated leather with real open-pore wood and suede-like headliner. A variety of drive systems and two suspension arrangements are available. chrysler's 3. 6-liter v6 engine is standard and more than sufficient for anything but heavy towing. For towing, they offer the 5. 7-liter hemi v8 and, at a higher price point, the new ecodiesel. With 240 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque, the ecodiesel's effortless nature is ideal for a big-wheeled heavy box like this. The diesel's epa city rating matches the v8's highway rating; and epa ratings for diesels tend to the pessimistic side, counter to ratings for gasoline and hybrid vehicles. the restyle applied to the 2014 grand cherokee gives it a cleaner, more integrated look, while sophistication increases with price. This steroidal performance wagon competes with the porsche cayenne, bmw x5m and x6m, mercedes-benz ml63 amg, and might get some audi sq5 or cadillac cts-v wagon shoppers. The only option is all-wheel drive and an e group. Limited options include the diesel and v8 engines, either of which is required for quadra-drive ii 4wd or air suspension. There's plenty of chrome on upper trims, while the entry model's simpler appearance looks more apropos jeep's mission statement. Some have dark tow hooks, the overland gets chrome and the summit doesn't have any. at the other end all grand cherokees get led-ring taillights that echo the headlights, with clear-lens signals and backup lights that actually help the camera view. Replacing the big broad chrome name strip beneath the window with an inset jeep badge cut the pudgy factor notably.
